County Regional Fire Service responds to morning fire

At approximately 0240 a.m. on Saturday April 3rd, The Wembley Fire Department and County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service were dispatched to a reported explosion and fire at an oilfield site near Range Road 81 and Township Road 722a.

On arrival fire crews found a large fire involving several tanks on an Anegada Oil Corporation lease site, which contain crude oil and produced water. Municipal fire services are working cooperatively with industrial fire contractors, and Anegada Oil Corporation to mitigate the situation.

Potential affected residents have been contacted by the RCMP and put on evacuation alert. There is no further public safety risk beyond those contacted.

There will be a significant amount of heavy black smoke coming from the site for the next few hours.

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) has been activated to support this event.

The public is asked to stay clear of the area and follow directions of all first responders. Road blocks have been set up in the area.
