Get Prepared with GPREP this Emergency Preparedness Week

Grande Prairie, Alta— The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) encourages residents to take part in Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week), May 4 to 10, by reviewing your emergency plans, understanding local risks and making sure you are ready for any unexpected small or large-scale emergencies.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a national campaign led by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the provinces, territories, and partners, to promote awareness and action across the country. The 2025 theme, “Be prepared. Know your risks,” is a reminder that preparedness starts with knowing what hazards may impact your region and taking steps to stay safe.

“GPREP looks forward to connecting with the community as we strengthen our emergency preparedness,” said GPREP manager Jamie Hannaford. “Emergency Preparedness Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of being ready for potential emergencies, big or small. By understanding local risks and taking proactive steps, we can all contribute to a safer, more resilient region.”

Know the risks. Be ready.

GPREP encourages all residents to take five simple steps to become more prepared:

  1. Get and stay informed – Follow @GPREPalerts on Facebook and X for accurate, timely information during emergencies.
  2. Know the risks – Understand which emergencies are most likely in the Grande Prairie region.
  3. Make a plan – Talk with your household about where to go and what to do if an emergency occurs.
  4. Build an emergency kit – Prepare to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
  5. Connect with your community – Knowing your neighbours can make a difference in an emergency.

Tips and resources to help you prepare are available on the Alberta Emergency Preparedness Week webpage.

This is the first Emergency Preparedness Week since GPREP launched its dedicated social media channels. Previously, emergency updates were shared through individual municipal accounts, but residents are now encouraged to follow @GPREPalerts directly on Facebook and X for real-time, centralized updates during emergencies.
