Update #22: Crews Work to Secure Kiskatinaw River Wildfire’s Edge

Grande Prairie — Tuesday, June 10, 2025, 11:15 a.m. – Today, crews will continue to focus on securing the edge of the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire to protect the community of Kelly Lake.

Overnight, crews worked steadily to construct a fire guard along Kelly Lake’s eastern edge. Other teams focused on building a guard in preparation for today’s planned ignitions, establishing control lines by reducing the number of trees in the fire’s path which is a critical step in securing the north side. Meanwhile, structure protection crews worked to extinguish flames within Kelly Lake and the County of Grande Prairie, while also safeguarding properties by clearing flammable materials around homes and outbuildings.

Today, crews are directly attacking the northeast corner and working with heavy equipment to establish fire guards. Firefighting activity continues on the west and southwest sides of the wildfire.

The evacuation order and alert issued by the County of Grande Prairie remain in effect.

Weather and Fire Behaviour

  • Today brings some of the most moderate conditions seen in several days.
  • Temperatures this morning are around 4°C, humidity at 60 per cent, and no wind—significantly more stable than conditions seen in the previous four to five days.
  • Although temperatures are expected to climb to 22°C this afternoon and humidity will dip to 18 per cent, only light north-northeast winds are forecast, which will help limit fire behaviour.
  • Overnight, humidity will rise again, and winds will remain light. While fire activity could pick up again tomorrow as winds strengthen and humidity drops, today offers a temporary reprieve in fire behaviour.

Alberta Wildfire, the B.C. Wildfire Service, and the County of Grande Prairie are operating under unified command to coordinate efforts in managing and containing this large wildfire which remains classified as out of control. The unified command is also working closely with the Peace River Regional District to ensure a coordinated regional response.
