Update #23: No residential homes, outbuildings destroyed within County of Grande Prairie
Grande Prairie — Tuesday, June 10, 2025, 10: 45 p.m. – Firefighters took full advantage of today’s moderate conditions in the ongoing battle against the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire. Fortunately, no residential homes or outbuildings have been damaged or destroyed within the County of Grande Prairie.
The size of the wildfire is 21,679 hectares. The evacuation order and alert issued by the County of Grande Prairie remain in effect.
Weather and Fire Behaviour
Today’s limited visibility due to increased smoke cover and shifting wind conditions presented challenges for ignition activity.
On the County side of the wildfire, dozer groups worked to build a guard at the head of the fire while additional teams carried out hand ignition to strategically reduce fuel in the path of the wildfire. Helicopters performed bucketing operations to cool hot spots and limit fire spread.
Looking ahead, winds are expected to shift east and east-northeast which may have the potential to drive the fire to the west and southwest.
ATCO Natural Gas Outage
Due to wildfire activity in the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire area and to ensure safety of the area, ATCO temporarily shut off natural gas service on Monday afternoon, June 9, to approximately 90 customers within and outside the evacuated zone. A further update from ATCO today outlined a new plan that will see gas restored to some customers tomorrow.
Unified Command
Alberta Wildfire, the B.C. Wildfire Service, and the County of Grande Prairie are operating under unified command to coordinate efforts in managing and containing this large wildfire which remains classified as out of control. The unified command is also working closely with the Peace River Regional District to ensure a coordinated regional response.
