Update #26: Improved Conditions Allow Crews to Advance Wildfire Containment
Grande Prairie — Wednesday, June 11, 2025, 10:15 p.m. – The combination of favourable weather conditions and continued progress on the Kiskatinaw River Wildfire led the County of Grande Prairie to reduce the size of the evacuation order and alert earlier today.
The wildfire has now grown to 26,628 hectares and remains classified as out of control.
Weather and Fire Behaviour
Smoke cover throughout the day helped limit fire intensity by reducing temperatures and elevating humidity levels.
Winds
Winds shifted throughout the afternoon, creating challenges for ignition operations. Gusts of up to 35 km/h were observed in some areas, affecting predictability of fire movement. Ground ignition operations were halted today as a safety precaution but will resume once conditions allow.
Operations
Earlier today, the County of Grande Prairie downgraded portions of the evacuation order to an evacuation alert following improved conditions and progress by firefighting crews.
Throughout the day, crews made good progress working with heavy equipment to establish fire guards on the northeast corner. Better visibility allowed aviation resources to operate more effectively, supporting ground crews with targeted water drops. Firefighters will continue night operations to identify and extinguish hotspots and reinforce control lines.
Unified Command
Alberta Wildfire, the B.C. Wildfire Service, and the County of Grande Prairie are operating under unified command to coordinate efforts in managing and containing this large wildfire which remains classified as out of control. The unified command is also working closely with the Peace River Regional District to ensure a coordinated regional response.
